You’ve done it haven’t you? Spent a little too much time pinning beautiful living rooms on Pinterest. Most of these photos are taken of homes that have been aided with interior designers and big budgets. If most of your budget went elsewhere and you’re stuck thinking about the futon in your living room, I’ve got your back. Check out my TOP 5 HACKS for styling an affordable and stunning living room.
1. Add Drama With Paint
A fresh coat of paint can instantly make a room feel polished and new. Try a neutral wall color paired with dark accents for a look that feels masculine and modern. An off-white paired with neutral furniture will help you achieve a muted palette where you can easily switch out focal colors with the use of throws and pillows. A deep colored accent wall can create a statement, a focal point.
2. Bring in Color with Plants
One of the easiest ways to add color to your home is with plants. Decorating with plants is something I’ve really enjoyed in our new home. I am a huge lover of bringing the outdoors in, in this way. In fact, I’ll let you in on a little secret; not all of my plants are real! The succulents above are faux, and one of my favorite pieces! So much so that we have more than one of the same design.
3. Know Where to Shop for Area Rugs
Use a rug to define an area, such as a seating or entertaining space. This is especially helpful in open concept homes that need definition. You can also use a rug as a foundation or basis for your room’s color scheme. Our rug (pictured above) is a linen color with a dark gray Moroccan pattern. Because it is relatively neutral I have been able to switch our couch twice and play with furniture while still complimenting the rug.
You don’t have to blow your budget on an area rug. Look in places like HomeGoods, Home Depot, or Overstock. There is a great array of affordable rugs at a fraction of the price.
4. Check Garage Sales and Holiday Sales for TV Stands
Garage sales are packed with loved furniture and you may just come across some gems for a far better price than your local big box store. Easily give the item a makeover by adding a coat of paint, switching hardware, or even sanding portions to give a distressed look.
You may also try waiting for holiday sales. We purchased our television unit years and years ago on a holiday sale and it’s held up through several moves and several rooms within our home.
5. Keep Your Space Clean
I truly believe keeping your space clean and free of excess is one of the easiest ways to give a room a face lift. Steam clean your rug, clean your pillows and sofa, dust off the chatskis, and open the blinds. While we’re at it, do you truly need 75 items on your shelves, books you never intend on re-reading, and children’s toys strewn on the floor? If it no longer brings you joy or serves a purpose, remove it.
These are points I personally swear by, not only in my living room, but throughout my home. I hope my TOP 5 HACKS for styling an affordable and stunning living room help you in refreshing your space!
