Confession time. Many things about my body (and my life) are changing. I’m needing to spend more time, time that I don’t have, to look like I once did. Between the never-ending cycle of starting and stopping new workout routines (I talked about that here) and the lack of time to head to Sephora when I’m out of makeup, looking and feeling great can at times seem like a full-time job.
Let’s take a closer look. Prior to pregnancy my skin was radiant..after having my daughter it was radiant.. cue breastfeeding the last few years and I now begrudgingly welcome hormonal blemishes more frequently then I would like. While I’d like to blame this on age and hormones alone, I know that’s not the only factor. We also moved , and let me tell you, I am falling in love with our house and our community more and more each week, but the weather is much more real here than ever before. We get cold winters and very hot summers, each mixed with dry air. And let me tell you that all of these things combined with the fact that I’m not twenty anymore mean that I need to take measures to keep my skin looking and feeling great.
So when I started doing face-masks a bit more frequently, I started asking myself can I make my own product that is not only smooth but helps to exfoliate my skin. Admittedly, I’m half hippie and enjoy doing things pretty natural so this excited me. I cannot turn back time or help climate change, but I can treat my skin to a quick pamper session in a few steps.
Who needs a spa when you have a bowl full of lemons?
This will only take 3 ingredients to make, and bam instant body scrub.
Juice of 1 lemon
5 tbsp sugar
1 tbsp olive oil
*Store in a glass jar with a lid
Mix ingredients together in a jar until smooth. After washing your body and while skin is still damp, gently rub the exfoliating scrub into your skin with your fingers in a circular motion. This is great for your lips too (I dare you not to taste it!). Rinse well with warm water.
Let’s talk about the benefits of these simple and sweet ingredients:
Olive Oil: Olive oil is an exceptional moisturizer that contains antioxidants and helps to restore smoothness and protect the skin from ultraviolet light.
Sugar: Perfect size granules for gently scrubbing away dead skin.
Lemon: Antibacterial and anti fungal
Depending on how sensitive your skin is you can use this several times throughout the week. It only takes minutes to use and washes away just like the stressors of the day.
After exfoliating always make sure to add moisture back to your skin. I like to use a natural cocoa butter lotion, but healthy skin doesn’t stop there. Make sure you are drinking plenty of water.
As far as cost breakdown goes, the entire recipe costs about $1.50 to make depending on the price of your lemon. Because each recipe is good for 4 uses that’s about $0.37 per use.
This should go without saying, but this is 2017, and people still ‘need’ needless warnings. Let your skin glow and bask in it’s radiance, do not rub your skin abrasively.
Now, moms, and wives, lock yourself in your bathroom for a much needed break and gently get to scrubbing!
